In case you have missed the recent news, there have been outbreaks of the avian influenza in large flocks of chickens AND cows. Yes, you read that right. Cows.
From the CDC: "April 1, 2024—A person in the United States has tested positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A(H5N1) virus (“H5N1 bird flu”), as reported by Texas and confirmed by CDC. This person had exposure to dairy cattle in Texas presumed to be infected with HPAI A(H5N1) viruses. The patient reported eye redness (consistent with conjunctivitis), as their only symptom, and is recovering. The patient was told to isolate and is being treated with an antiviral drug for flu."
Also this week: Cal-Maine foods in Texas euthanized 1.7 million layer-bird chickens this past week after some birds in their flock tested positive for the avian influenza (ref) (I am sorry but why are there 2 million chickens located in one facility?)

I am not discrediting that animals can get/are getting sick - but there are of course consequences to stuffing animals in confinement buildings, giving livestock routine vaccinations, and giving them antibiotics in their day-to-day drinking water (ref) - how could they NOT get sick when exposed to anything?
That type of CAFO (Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation) farming is NOT what we support at Nourish. We are a partnership of SMALL regenerative farms where 'needle free' livestock live outdoors in fresh air and are rotated to fresh pasture, ultimately working with Mother Nature.
I have a personal experience with this avian influenza. Back in 2021 there was an 'outbreak' here in Michigan and somehow our farm received a visit from the USDA.
They showed up in Hazmat suits and a few suitcases full of test kits to test our birds for the Avian influenza. They did not like that our birds were outside because they are 'exposed to the influenza from migrating birds ahead'.
I am sorry, what? It is dangerous to let animals live outside? Living in tune with Mother Nature? Exposed to fresh air and sunlight? Have healthy animals that do not rely on livestock pharmaceuticals?
I had to sign a piece of paper saying that if the tests came back positive, the USDA would come and euthanize all of our chickens and could not have chickens for 3 months so that the virus would pass. (Reflecting back, I probably didn't have to let them on the property or sign anything - but we were in our first year of farming and were afraid. And fear is a great way to make people do certain things)
Thankfully, our ladies tested negative. A culmination of experiences like this is just one of the factors that motivated us to start Nourish Cooperative.

I’ve had to fight the most egregious discrimination ALL my life. So, I know what it feels like to be treated as a second, third, … fifth class citizen.

When my sister vouched for me, they were so embarrassed, they didn’t even apologize, but said they would “get me if they ever saw me on the street.” Years later, they falsely arrested me as revenge, but were forced to drop all charges as the case was OUTRIGHT dismissed.
In 2012, at age 49, even after I was honored by the Smithsonian providing unequivocal evidence that I invented email as a 14-year-old working in Newark, NJ, those facts bothered a racist “liberal” historian so much, he threw tantrums to conflate text messaging with email - the system I first created. He and others were so upset at the facts, they then went to the extent of saying upper case “EMAIL” is different than lower case “email.”
At age 54, the Massachusetts GOP Republicans and Democrats colluded to ILLEGALLY keep me OFF the debate stage even though I had met EVERY requirement to be on that debate stage as the INDEPENDENT candidate for US SENATE in Massachusetts in 2018.
